disAbility Connexion

Do you know that there are 650 million people with disabilities (PWDs) in the world. This group
makes up 11% of the world’s population and is also one of the least reached groups in the world
forJesus Christ. South Africa has approximately 4 million PWDs, many living in rural areas
where superstition, myth and lack of facilities make life difficult for them. In general PWDs have largely been ignored by the church, but disAbility Connexion is one ministry that is trying to make a difference by connecting people with disabilities to themselves, to others and most of all to the church.

Barbara Watt, herself a paraplegic, heads up the disAbility Connexion ministry and has a small team of volunteers working alongside her. Some of the work Barbara and her team are involved in includes:

  • Raising awareness about disability issues and the challenges that PWDs face in everyday life
  • Educating churches and others about disability and equipping them to reach out to the disabled
  • Shattering some of the myths and superstitions surrounding PWDs, particularly in the church, by giving teaching on the Biblical approach to disability
  • Supporting and encouraging PWDs through monthly outreach meetings
  • Sharing the Gospel with some of the PWDs who don’t yet know Christ

This year disAbility Connexion is promoting Disability Sunday which takes place on the 30
 August.
The team will be encouraging churches throughout South Africa to focus on what the Scriptures
say about disability, on what challenges face people with disabilities in their local communities, and
on seeking  fresh ways to serve and reach out to people with disabilities.
